4 Simple Bike Tune-Ups That Can Make Your Ride Smoother

If you are someone who is trying to reduce your carbon footprint, you may use a bicycle instead of a car to get to work, to the store, and other places close by. Not only does this reduce your carbon footprint, but it also allows you to get some great exercise on a regular basis. As a bicycle owner, you still want to keep in mind that you are going to have to make a few maintenance repairs and tune-ups, just like you would with a car, to keep your bike running smoothly. Here are four simple tune-ups that can keep your bike in great shape and ensure that you are getting a smooth ride every time:

  1. Lubricate the Chain: The chain on your bicycle is the most important gadget on your bike. It's what keeps you moving when you pedal and allows the tires to rotate at the same speed. The only problem with the chain is that it easily collects dirt and grime over time. This dirt and grime can get caught in the gears and slow you down while also wearing out your chain. This can lead to you having to replace the chain often, which is why you want to lubricate the chain often (even more often if you ride in dirt regularly). When you lubricate, you want to use a lightweight oil and wipe off excess when you are done to help get rid of the excess dirt and grime left behind, as well.
  2. Inspect Brake Pads: The brake pads on your bike are important for your safety. If these are worn down, then braking can be more difficult, which is especially dangerous if you ride in traffic. Be sure to replace the brake pads every time you notice signs of wearing, including difficulty braking.
  3. Inspect Tire Pressure:  The tire pressure on your bike is important, as well for safety and guaranteeing that you have a smooth ride. If tire pressure is low, it can make pedaling more difficult. You are going to have to use more energy to get around. You can easily fill up air in your tires if you purchase a bike pump or you can use an air pump at your local gas station.
  4. Lubricate Moving Parts of Brakes:  Besides just lubricating the chain, you also want to lubricate the moving parts of the brakes. This is important for safety, as well since these moving parts can also get jammed from dirt and grime over time.

By knowing these little ways to keep your bike in the best shape possible for a continuously smooth ride, you can be sure that you stay safe and love your bike rides every time. For further assistance, contact a local bike repair shop, such as Kore Bikes.
